Newington, Conn.--July 7, 2010--On Site Gas Systems received honorable mention in the 2010 NIOSH Bullard-Sherwood Research-to-Practice (r2p) mine safety intervention award for its high output in-mine nitrogen generator, the N-300 CMI.

NIOSH contracted On Site Gas Systems to build a nitrogen generation system that would pump inert nitrogen gas into a sealed mine area, to quickly reduce the oxygen concentration of the atmosphere and therefore eliminate the possibility of combustion within the mine. The N-300 CMI is a particularly attractive solution that overcomes the difficulties associated with current approaches, which rely on nitrogen sources located at the ground surface. The system is portable and compact enough to fit on a standard mining shield car. 

The awards committee’s recommendation said:  “The result is a safer environment in the shortest amount of time. This technology has been fully embraced as a significant achievement by the mining industry and provides a means to eliminate dangerous conditions; thus potentially playing a primary role in reducing mine explosion-related injury and fatality.”
