Major veterinary hospital installs medical air and medical oxygen system

Veterinary Specialist Services and Animal Emergency Services on the Gold Coast in Queensland have successfully become autonomous in respect of their medical air for breathing and tool driving and also their medical oxygen by installing a on site oxygen generation system from On Site Gas Systems.

On site Gas Systems supplied a compressor, appropriate air filtration to deliver medical grade air, one of their oxygen generators, two automatic gas back up control panels and a medical gas alarm panel.  Hosmed was responsible for the installation under supervision of On Site Gas Systems and On Site Gas Systems was responsible for system start up and commissioning.

The system produces 370LPM of medical air at pressures high enough for medical tool driving.  The air is also regulated down and reticulated throughout the hospital for breathing air.  The system also produces over 100LPM of medical oxygen to the USP (US Pharmacopeia) medical oxygen standard of 93%.

The medical air produced is to standards for hospital grade medical air and is of the quality stipulated by the European Pharmacopoeia for hospital/medical quality air.

The customer asked On Site Gas Systems to install a fail over system for both the air and oxygen so that in the event of any major problem, the reticulation would automatically switch over to back up cylinder gas.  The back up panel for oxygen has a constant reading of the oxygen purity being produced and if this falls below certain set points then the back up gas will take over.  Similar sets ups were put in place for air and oxygen based on pressure.  For absolute monitoring, on site gas installed one of their proprietary medical gas alarm panels in the hospitals ICU which will indicate if the back up gas banks have had to take over and for what reason.

The system was installed in April 2010 and since initial commissioning (to the time of writing this July 2010) there has been 100% up time and the back up gas has not been used saving the customer very substantial sums of money and the headaches and danger involved in constant cylinder changeover.

The customer has had such a pleasant experience with the system they are installing another identical system at their other hospital in Brisbane shortly.
